OT Tips to Ease into the Start of School
-
Practice the Plan
Practice the morning routine for a few mornings before school begins. This helps kids to learn or readjust to a new routine and it allows parents to get a feel for how long the morning routine will take. Use a visual schedule if needed to keep kids on track and more independent with their morning “to-do” list!
-
Prepare the Path
Get organized the night before! There is nothing more stressful and overwhelming than rushing around to get out the door on time in the morning. Packing lunches, backpacks, extra clothes for sport, or laying out outfits for the next day can make the morning more relaxing and less hectic.
-
Prevent the Rush
Leave some extra time for the unexpected. Allow 10-15 minutes of “free time” in the mornings just in case a bowl of cereal gets spilled, the dog tracks mud through the house, or a shoe is missing. On the mornings everything goes smoothly, your kids will have some extra time to play or eat breakfast and you will have some extra time to enjoy a cup or coffee or tea!
-
Protect the Peace
Have recovery time at the end of the school day! The first few weeks of school can be exhausting for kids as they get back into the routine of learning and having sensory stimulation for the majority of the day. Before diving into homework or chores, leave time for them to unwind with some play time. This can look differently depending on the child- running around outside, playing quietly with legos, listening to music- but this unwinding time is so helpful for sensory regulation and finishing the day strong.
